Where did you go to high school/college?

I grew up in Garrett County, but I went to school in Allegany County, graduating from Westmar High.  I then went to Frostburg State where I was a dual major in Business Administration and Accounting.

What was your path to your current job?

In 4th grade, I didn’t know what an accountant was, but I knew that I wanted to make money by working with money.  I interned in college at the accounting firm Delaney & Turnbull (now Turnbull, Hoover & Kahl).  My first real job was as an Accounting Clerk at Community Action.  Within 2 years, I was a Staff Accountant at First United Bank & Trust and was promoted to Senior Staff Accountant.  When my second child was born, I took a 10-year break from my career to be a stay-at-home mom.  Regaining my career after a decade was difficult.  I began working at the Health Department as an Accountant Trainee in 2012.

What is your favorite part of your job, or your biggest accomplishment?

I love the challenges my job gives me every day. But it would surprise no one that I love developing Excel spreadsheets that automate processes, compile data, and provide tools that help us analyze our work.

What would staff from other units be surprised to find out about you?

Accountants aren’t known for being surprising — or for being entertaining.  But in high school, I was a member of the show choir.  (I was also on the Mock Trial Team. – They may cancel each other out.)

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Home is my happy place, and I love working inside and outside at home:  gardening, canning, cooking, baking, decorating.  When I finally stop, it’s usually to get lost in a good book.

What is your favorite quote or advice?

“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”  Psalm 46:5.

I have this verse pinned in my office to remind me I am not alone, and even when I feel inadequate, God will not allow me to fall.
