Go! Garrett County

By Diane Lee, Public Information Officer, Garrett County Health Department

Each year, the Garrett County STEPS to Better Health Committee (STEPS) offers two scholarships to Garrett County graduating seniors who are pursuing a career in a health care field.

This year’s high school recipients are Lillian Argabrite and Tiffany Opel.

Lillian Argabrite graduated from Southern High School and plans to attend Elon University to study microbiology/biotechnology. “I have been interested in this field since middle school and would love to work in a research environment,” she said. “I want to study the way microorganisms affect the health of the world’s populations as well as how humans can use this resource in new and innovative ways.”

Tiffany Opel graduated from Northern High School and plans to attend Garrett College to study physical therapy. “I plan to go to college to fulfill my dream of becoming a Physical Therapist,” she said. “After an injury to my left knee, I was ordered physical therapy,” she said. “During the little time spent in the office I took interest in the work that I saw being performed. I was completely amazed at how increasing the mobility of the joint helped heal the injury and decrease the pain. This seems to be a great alternative to addictive pain medications that are often prescribed.”

The STEPS to Better Health Scholarship is designed to encourage recipients to pursue a career in a health care field.

Scholarship requirements include:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Plan to major in a health-related field at a two or four-year college
  • Demonstrate good character and leadership
  • Demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities

The STEPS Committee is composed of local businesses, public agencies, and private citizens who want to improve the overall wellness in the community. The committee is the organizing body for the Garrett County Health Fair and Family Fun Festival, which was canceled during the last three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Next year’s health fair is scheduled for Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Garrett College CARC.
