Well Permits and Completion Reports

A well may not be constructed until the Approving Authority (GCHD; Office of Environmental Health) has issued a permit to drill the well. The Application for Permit to Drill Well will be submitted by the well driller you have contracted. This person must be licensed by the State Board of Well Drillers.

A proposed well location for a water supply or open loop geothermal well shall meet the following set back requirements:

  1. 10 feet from a property line
  2. 15 feet from a road or dedicated right-of-way
  3. 30 feet from a building foundation
  4. 100 feet from on-site sewage disposal systems
  5. 50 feet from public sewerage grinders

*Contact the Office of Environmental Health for questions regarding well variances.

The well permit application fee includes the cost of potability water testing by the health department. The well owner is responsible for contacting the Office of Environmental Health to schedule this testing, unless a well driller or contractor has been assigned this duty. Before the well can be used, the approving authority must issue a Certificate of Potability.

Completion reports for existing wells are available on the County’s WebMap. Click on the desired property, then select “Health Dept Document Search By Parcel” to find available well and septic permits. For additional assistance, please complete an Information Request.
