The Garrett County Health Department launched a new campaign in February. The behavioral change campaign titled ‘Store. Monitor. Secure. What’s in Your Cabinet?’ was created in response to data collected through community surveys which revealed that many youth get alcohol and prescription drugs from their home or the homes of friends or family members.
“Store. Monitor. Secure. What’s in Your Cabinet?” focuses on ways to reduce the risk of underage drinking and non-medical use of medications among youth.
The campaign asks everyone to help protect youth by considering the following:
1) Properly STORE alcohol and medications in the home in a safe location to reduce youth access.
2) MONITOR alcohol and medications in the home by frequently tracking and counting the amounts of each one.
3) And, lock and SECURE alcohol and medications in the home by keeping alcohol in locked cabinets and using combination locks on alcohol bottles and by keeping medication in a locked box and disposing unused medication at a local medication drop box location.
This campaign is sponsored by the Garrett County Health Department with funds from the Maryland Department of Health and SAMHSA. For more information about the campaign or ways to promote it, call 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111.
