Marylanders without health insurance have until June 15 to sign up for a plan through the Maryland Health Benefits Exchange’s Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This SEP was launched in response to the COVID-19 crisis and was first announced in March.
“These are unprecedented times,” said Clark Lanthier, Navigator, AHEC West Health Insurance Program. “Due to the COVID-19 emergency and the resulting upheaval to everyday life, many people are now eligible for health insurance that weren’t before. According to the last available estimates, there are around 1,279 uninsured people in Garrett County. Some of these folks could be eligible for free or very low-cost insurance. We find that 85% of people in Maryland qualify for either Medicaid or tax credits through the exchange.”
Marylanders may enroll in health plans by:
- Visiting MarylandHealthConnection.gov, the “Enroll MHC” mobile app
- Calling Garrett County Health Department’s Maryland Health Connection office – 301-334-7720. Phone calls only, no walk-ins
- Calling AHEC West Health Insurance Program 888-202-0212

“Take this special opportunity to make sure your family is covered by a qualified health insurance plan,” said Maria Friend, Director of Early Care and the Maryland Health Connection Office at the Garrett County Health Department. “It’s one less thing you’ll need to worry about.”
