October is recognized as the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Month, a nationwide effort to prevent opioid misuse and keep communities safe by encouraging the proper disposal of unused or expired medications.
The Garrett County Health Department, in partnership with the Maryland State Police, will be hosting three local take back events this month:
- Monday, October 6, 2025, Gorman Volunteer Fire Department, 11 AM – 1 PM
- Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Friendsville Town Park, 2 PM – 4 PM
- Thursday, October 16, 2025, Kitzmiller Community Center, 11 AM – 1 PM
Safe disposal drop boxes are also available year-round at Oakland Town Police, Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, and McHenry State Police Barracks.
Proper disposal of unused medications plays a vital role in preventing prescription drugs from being misused. Opioid misuse often begins with medications found at home, and take back programs provide a simple way for residents to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Last year, the state of Maryland safely disposed of more than 21,000 pounds of medication, while residents of Garrett County contributed 165.55 pounds of medication through local take back efforts. Each pound collected represents a step toward preventing potential misuse, protecting our environment, and supporting healthier communities.
The Health Department encourages all residents to take advantage of these opportunities to dispose of medications properly. By working together, Garrett County can continue to make progress in the fight against opioid misuse.
