UPDATED! – Exercise Demonstrations Are Part of Health Fair
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that physical activity is one of the best things people can do to improve their health, but what are some activity choices in Garrett County? A series of exercise demos at the Garrett County Health Fair will give you some ideas and let you sample some of the options.
Demos are scheduled throughout the day and include Tai Ji Quan, Jazzercise, REFIT, Yoga, and Activity Bingo. Times are listed below. The 2019 Garrett County Health Fair and Family Fun Festival is scheduled for April 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Garrett College CARC.
Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance – 8:45 a.m. Tai Ji Quan is an evidence–based exercise program that transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning in space, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints, and lower-extremity muscle strength. It can improve balance, strength, performance in functional walking activities and prevent falls in older and aging adults. Tai Ji Quan classes take place at various times at the Mary Browning Senior Center in Oakland and the Grantsville Senior. Call the centers for more information on times.
Jazzercise – 9:30 a.m. The Oakland Jazzercise Center’s demonstration will cover aerobic and strength training exercises in both high and low impact and intensity variations. Jazzercise is the original dance party workout and is celebrating its 50th anniversary! Jazzercise has stood the test of time by continuously evolving to get results. Jazzercise blends dance cardio with Pilates, yoga, kickboxing and strength training for the ultimate full-body workout. At “Roots” you can find everything from restorative to high–intensity classes, women’s gatherings, private parties, blacklight yoga, dance, and a variety of other wellness workshops. Their demo will include a combination of Vinyasa and Buti Yoga. Vinyasa is an ancient yoga practice based on flowing through postures with connected breath work and static holds of various poses. Buti Yoga is a primal movement format that incorporates tribal dance and dynamic movement through a creative power-flow style practice. It is musically driven and designed as a HIIT style (high–intensity interval training) class. For more information call 970–922-8576 or find Roots: A Yoga and Movement Studio on Facebook.
CARC Group Fitness: Activity BINGO– 11:45 a.m. Garrett College CARC staff will lead the crowd in a fun game of Activity BINGO – demonstrating activities you can do at home, while traveling, or anywhere! Be sure to grab your BINGO card at the beginning of the demonstration and participate while marking those squares off for a chance to win a great prize!
The health fair will also include informational booths, some free health screenings, door prizes, and many other giveaways. Like Garrett County Health Fair on Facebook for up-to-date information, or visit garretthealth.org/health-fair.
According to CDC, physical activity is vital for normal growth and development, and healthy aging. Active people generally live longer and are at less risk for serious health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. For people with chronic diseases, physical activity can help manage these conditions and their complications.
Cutline: Oakland Jazzercise Center got the crowd moving during their demo at last year’s health fair. Demos will also be a part of the 2019 Garrett County Health Fair and Family Fun Festival scheduled for April 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Garrett College CARC.
