Cessation Classes
The Garrett County Health Department has scheduled a tobacco cessation class to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at the Northern Rescue Squad building in Friendsville.
Research has shown that involvement in a group increases the chances of success in quitting tobacco. “During our cessation classes we simply sit around the tables and participants talk about what’s working and what’s not during their journey to be tobacco free,” said instructor Mike Wilburn.
Any Garrett County resident can participate in ongoing classes offered at the health department and other community locations throughout the year. Each set of classes lasts 10 weeks with weekly meetings of approximately one hour. Vouchers are provided for the full cost of the nicotine patch, Zyban®, Chantix®, nicotine gum, and nicotine lozenges for interested participants. The vouchers can be redeemed at most county pharmacies.
“We really should call it a ‘nicotine cessation program’ because it is great for anyone wanting to stop smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, rubbing snuff, or using e-cigarettes,” said Mike Wilburn, health educator at the Garrett County Health Department.
Additional classes are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Oakland office of the Garrett County Health Department, and Jan. 18 at the Grantsville Outreach Center.
