Play Hard, Live Clean (PHLC)
PHLC is a campaign based on research demonstrating that if a young person arrives at age 21 without smoking, abusing alcohol, or using drugs, they are virtually certain never to do so. PHLC encourages youth to make good choices by recognizing and rewarding them for certain positive lifestyle accomplishments.
In the elementary schools in Garrett County, all students are invited to complete three challenges to earn an incentive for each. If a student completes all three challenges, they also earn a gold medal. The challenges revolve around physical activity, healthy eating, and mindfulness. In the middle schools, all students are invited to participate in three month-long challenges on physical activity, healthy eating, and kindness. The homeroom at each middle school with the highest completion rate earns an incentive. Bernard the Bear visits the middle school with the overall highest completion rate for each challenge.
The PHLC campaign at the high school is administered almost entirely online. High school students are invited to participate in monthly challenges related to leading a lifestyle free of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and any other drug that could create an artificial high. Students who complete the challenges earn points and are eligible for a PHLC scholarship upon graduation.
