The Environmental Health Services Unit of the Garrett County Health Department would like to remind property owners in areas not served by public sewer to complete the necessary maintenance of their septic systems.
Septic tanks are designed and sized to provide sufficient time for solids to settle, ensuring only liquids are discharged to the drainfield. Over time, however, solids accumulate inside the septic tank. This buildup reduces the tank’s efficiency and may allow solids to pass into the drainfield.
When solids accumulate in the drainfield, the system can become clogged. This may result in sewage backing up into the home and/or surfacing on the ground. Both situations pose potential health risks and often require costly repairs.
Therefore, it is recommended that homeowners have their septic tanks pumped to remove solids every three to five years. Certain septic systems, such as those using Best Available Technology (BAT) units, require annual maintenance.
If you are interested in obtaining information regarding the type or location of your septic system, the Environmental Health office may have relevant records on file. Individuals may submit an information request ticket to Environmental Health via the following link: https://bit.ly/eh-request.
