Western, Md. – In collaboration with more than a dozen local partners, AHEC West’s Healthy Together programming is finally getting underway, with planned health screenings, physical activity events, and food distribution scheduled in the project area.
Healthy Together will offer intake screenings on Saturday, December 14, at the Hunter’s Breakfast in Garrett County. This free event will be held at the Friendsville Rescue Squad Hall from 9 to 11 a.m., including a community breakfast, health screenings, and a sign-up for a free Holiday Edition of the Harvest Hub Meal Box that will be distributed on Dec 21st. The meal box is designed to address the needs of families experiencing hunger this season and includes four meals for at least four people.
While at the Hunter’s Breakfast, residents who complete the Healthy Together screener will be entered to win a $100 Cabela’s gift card. AHEC West, the Garrett County Health Department’s Population Health, Innovation, & Informatics Unit, and Mountain Laurel Medical Center are hosting the event. Healthy Together is a five-year initiative funded by a $4.5 million Health Equity Resource Communities (HERC) grant from the state Community Health Resources Commission (CHRC). The program will cater to people along the Georges’ Creek corridor in Allegany County and remote communities in Garrett County, identified for their vulnerability and challenges in accessing healthy food, transportation, and other vital resources.
Over the five-year funding period, this program’s network of local partners will implement a multifaceted approach to resolving health inequities and building a healthier region. Planned initiatives include health fairs, opportunities to participate in fun physical fitness activities, regular Community Health Worker visits to remote parts of the area, and improved access to food and transportation, among many other elements.
“We are excited to launch the screenings and engagement that come as part and parcel of the Healthy Together program,” says AHEC West Associate Director Melissa Clark. “We encourage folks in the area to join us and our partners for the Hunter’s Breakfast, and to stay tuned and see where we’ll be next.”
