School-Based Therapists from the Garrett County Health Department along with the School Social Workers from Garrett County Public Schools recently completed a nine-class Advanced Trauma Treatment certification program through The Ferentz Institute in Pikesville.

“The training was holistic, taking into consideration a person’s mind, body and spirit, teaching us how to work with people of all ages who have experienced trauma,” said Jamie Kamp, LCSW-C. “Lisa Ferentz, the instructor, provided us with a lot of hands on and practical resources and strategies to use with the individual and the family that supports that individual.”

The program focused on a strengths-based approach to the assessment and treatment of adolescent and adult survivors of trauma, abuse, and neglect.

“Attending this training was an inspiring and powerful experience that left us with fresh new perspectives and creative interventions,” said Charise Peddicord, LCPC. “The strengths-based approach to trauma informed treatment provides a more comprehensive view of clients, allowing us to better pace treatment and meet individual needs.”

Each participant completed all nine classes and passed the exam to receive their certificate.

“This training has given us the ability to bring a much needed resource to Garrett County,” said Shannon Haley, LCSW-C. “It is estimated that 70% of the U.S. population has experienced a trauma.  We are now well prepared to help those in need of services.”

The group was able to attend the training because of a collaboration between the Department of Social Services, Garrett County Public Schools, and Garrett County Health Department.
