After School Programs

The Partners After School (PAS) programs at Oakland and Accident are underway for another school year. Participants engage in a variety of activities that encourage positive academic, mental, social, and physical growth by exploring new hobbies, interacting with members of the community, and learning about making healthy choices. New participants may join the program anytime throughout the school year, as space is available.

The Oakland program is open to third through eighth grade students from Yough Glades and Broad Ford Elementary, and Southern Middle schools, and meets at Southern Middle School. The Accident program is open to third through fifth grade students from Accident Elementary School and meets at the school. Normal program days are Monday through Friday from 3:15-6 p.m.

“We strongly encourage parent involvement in our program,” said Sadie Liller, director of the Oakland program. “We also schedule two parent/child activities and two family dinners each year.”

In addition to the health department, enrichment activities are provided by the Garrett County University of Maryland Extension, Girl Scouts of America, and Adventuresports Institute.

“Our program at Accident is STEM focused,” said Venessa Stacy, program director. “We integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math throughout all aspects of our program, which consists of snack, recreation, tutoring, enrichment, and homework time.”

PAS @ Oakland’s enrollment is currently full, with 49 participants, with a maximum each night of 40 students. Families interested in the program may call 301-334-7730 to be included on the waiting list. PAS @ Accident currently has a limited number of openings available for new participants. Applications may be picked up in the office at the school.

These Partners After School programs are administered by the Garrett County Health Department, and made possible by the Garrett County Local Management Board, the Maryland State Department of Education, the 21st Century Community Learning Center program, the Governor’s Office for Children, and United Way of Garrett County. Partners After School programs do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, color, religious belief, national origin, or disability in providing access to programs.
