Mock Teen Bedroom
Members of the Deer Park Community had two different chances to tour a Hidden in Plain Sight Mock Teen Bedroom display in November. The Deer Park Eliminators group invited adults to go through the display and try to find signs of drug use.
“We thought we went thru the room well and still we missed things,” said Michael DeWitt, a member of the group.
“The “mock teen bedroom” is a simultaneously amusing and horrifying scavenger hunt in which parents are challenged to find drug “stash safes” hidden in plain sight among common household items,” said Linda Costello, Prevention Specialist at the Garrett County Health Department, and Deer Park Eliminator’s member. “Participants who went through the display saw the red flags a parent should be alert for, including common hiding spots for drugs and tricks to disguise drug use.”
Garrett County Sheriff Rob Corley and members of the group share information about local drug trends with participants of one of the sessions.
The Deer Park Eliminators is one of six local Community Planning Groups (CPG) partially funded by the Garrett County Health Department. These community-based groups are made up of volunteers who assist in combatting risky behaviors such as prescription drug and opioid abuse in their communities.
