Healthy Moms & Babies, a brand new project at AHEC West, seeks to reduce the incidence and impact of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) in Allegany and Garrett counties. Funded through the federal Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP), it is a three-year project that officially began this past Sept. 30.

Our primary focus is to establish and/or enhance family support services in the two counties, and improve coordination of care. The project will address prevention, treatment, and recovery through a variety of chosen strategies.
Ā
Healthy Moms & Babies will reduce the morbidity and mortality of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) by working to improve systems of care, family supports and social determinants of health among pregnant women, mothers, and women of childbearing age who have a history of, or who are at risk for, SUD/OUD and their children, families, and caregivers.
Ā
Our key project partners are Garrett County Health Department, which will employ a part-time home visitor; Pressley Ridge family services, which will be providing evidence-based NAS training to the healthcare workforce; and Allegany County Health Department, which will provide client education and work to improve support linkages. Mind-Body Skills groups will be conducted in both counties to promote a message of resilience and self-care.
Ā
A trained and experienced Community Health Worker will work directly with Healthy Moms & Babies families, providing linkages to vital resources and support.
Ā
We are excited and look forward to having a positive impact in our region over the next three years!
