Garrett County Health Department Honors Agency Volunteers

May 22, 2018 | Press Releases

The Garrett County Health Department recently held a Volunteer Dinner at The Wisp to honor some of the 176 volunteers who contributed more than 3,780 cumulative hours of their time to health department programs during 2017.

Volunteers who worked at least 80 hour during last calendar year received special recognition at the dinner and a certificate of appreciation from the State of Maryland.

β€œVolunteers play a significant role in getting important public health messages into their communities,” said Bob Stephens, Garrett County Health Officer. β€œWhether they volunteer at an after school program, in a community planning group, or on an advisory board, they become the face of public health. We appreciate their dedication to making a difference in their community.”

The two volunteers who accumulated the greatest number of volunteer hours were high school students who served at the Partners After School @ Oakland Program. Carmen Smith worked a record total of 331.5 hours, and Madison Prudnick put in 266 hours.

The other top volunteers included Glenda Lane, 143 hours, Friendsville Community Watch; Aaron Smith, 93.5 hours, Partners After School @ Oakland Program; Joyce Lander, 87.5 hours, Accident Planning Group and the Garrett County Drug-Free Communities Action Team; and Carol Calhoun, 80.5 hours, Friendsville Community Watch.

A large portion of the volunteer hours came from six community planning groups scattered throughout the county. Their volunteers often devote evenings and weekends to bring prevention messages and community-strengthening events to their communities. Other volunteers serve on advisory boards and committees.
