This graph represents all new cases among Garrett County residents since July 1, 2021 and through September 15, 2021. The new cases are grouped together by week of testing. The cases are broken down between individuals who have been vaccinated and those who have not.

Things to note:

More and more cases are being diagnosed each week. The shape of the curve means we have a surge in cases, numbering 454 during this time frame.

Most of the new cases are among people who either made a personal choice to remain unvaccinated, or are under the age of 12 years and cannot be vaccinated.

Cases of COVID-19 occur in some people who are fully vaccinated. About 17% of cases diagnosed during the most recent week in this graph are among people who have been vaccinated.

Things to consider:

No vaccine is 100% effective against acquiring infection, but vaccines reduce transmission of contagious disease tremendously. They are most effective at preventing the worst outcomes. Vaccines in general are a public health success story and without them, society would take a great step backwards.

The current surge comes as a result of thousands of individual decisions not to be vaccinated. Collectively, the community suffers consequences (cancelled football games, closed daycare, staffing problems at our health institutions). Individually, there are also consequences.

Choose to be vaccinated and help do your part to end this surge. Please call Garrett County Health Department if you are ready to be vaccinated. We are happy to answer your questions and make an appointment for you.
