Free Overdose Response Trainings Scheduled

The Garrett County Health Department continues to hold periodic Overdoes Response Trainings at their offices in Oakland and Grantsville. These free classes cover recognition of the signs and symptoms of an overdose, activation of emergency response, rescue breathing, administration of Narcan, recovery support, and follow up treatment.

The next class is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7th, at the Oakland Office of the Health Department, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Persons 18 and older who complete the training will receive Narcan to administer to a person who is overdosing. “The Garrett County Health Department is working hard to prevent all forms of drug and alcohol abuse as well as to provide excellent out-patient treatment in our clinics,” said Garrett County’s Health Officer Bob Stephens. “With the nation-wide drug epidemic, we feel compelled and morally obligated to help individuals survive an overdose in order to get them into treatment and recovery.”

Additional classes are scheduled as follows:

• Tuesday, September 4, 5:30 pm, Grantsville Outreach Center
• Tuesday, October 2, 5:30 pm, Oakland
• Tuesday, December 4, 3:30 pm, Oakland

Drug overdose deaths are a leading cause of injury death in the United States – having surpassed motor vehicle crashes.

These classes are funded in part by the Maryland Department of Health.
