AmeriCorps: your opportunity to take part in a national service movement by making a difference right here in Garrett County.

A STAR! in Western Maryland is seeking individuals to serve through the Garrett County Health Department. Two positions are currently open: one half-time position and one minimal-time position.

Half-time AmeriCorps members (ACMs) serve 900 hours in direct service, mentoring 3rd-8th grade students in after school programs to encourage academic engagement, promote healthy choices among college students, and support a variety of community projects. This position will serve between September 2017 and August 2018, receiving a living stipend of approximately $6,315. AmeriCorps members successfully completing the term of service are eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of approximately $2,800, which can be used by the ACM or, under some conditions, can be transferred to a child or grandchild.

Minimal-time ACMs serve 300 hours assisting the Garrett County Health Department with the opioid crisis. The member’s main focus will be being a resource to the community by helping to coordinate two town meetings and getting resources to community individuals or groups. This position will serve between September 2017 and August 2018. AmeriCorps members successfully completing the term of service are eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of approximately $1,230, which can be used by the ACM or, under some conditions, can be transferred to a child or grandchild.

ACMs must be at least 18 years of age (or turning 18 during the service year), have a GED or high school diploma, be a US citizen or Naturalized Citizen, and pass a criminal history check. All positions are contingent upon final funding. AmeriCorps and the Garrett County Health Department are committed to making all of its programs, services, and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. Equal Opportunity Employer/M.F.H.

The positions will remain open until filled. Applications are available in Room 206 at the Garrett County Health Department in Oakland. For more information, contact Venessa Stacy at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111.
