Health Department Schedules Two Events Highlighting Issue of Drug Abuse
The public is invited to attend two community events that highlight the current issue of drug abuse in the county and across the nation. The events include a presentation and color fun run/walk, and a candlelight vigil for Overdose Awareness Day. Guest speakers Josh Duckworth and Matt Friend will be part of both evenings.
βBoth of our speakers are local young men who have overcome addiction,β said Prevention Coordinator Brenda Sisler. βI am touched by their dedication to helping others who are fighting their own battle.β
The first event, βEveryone Has a Story,β will be held on Wednesday, August 30th, 6-8 p.m. at Grantsville Town Park. The evening will begin with the presentation βAn Addict Named Josh,β where he will outline his descent into addiction and how he found his way back.
Pizza, drink, cornhole, and music will be available. The evening will conclude with a Color Fun Run/Walk. All ages are welcome at this non-competitive, un-timed event. Wear white to end up as a colorful masterpiece. Appropriate costumes are welcome.
The second event will be a Walk of Life and Candlelight Vigil in recognition of International Overdose Awareness on August 31st from 7 β 9 pm at Glades Park Pavilion at 10 Spruce Lane, Oakland, MD. The ceremony is designed to raise awareness that overdose affects all walks of life and is preventable.
In addition to Duckworth and Friend, other guest speakers include Taylor Day and Jean Tumbarello. Each speaker will talk about how the walk of addiction has affected their lives.
The walk will start promptly at 7:00 p.m., and the speaker presentations and candlelight vigil will take place after the walk.
βCome join us to understand how overdose affects each one of us and to remember the loved ones we have lost,β said Prevention Coordinator Sadie Liller. βItβs time to remember – itβs time to act.β
