Mental Health First Aid Classes Scheduled For May and June

Three Mental Health First Aid trainings are scheduled in Garrett County during May and June. Mental Health First Aid is the initial help given to a person showing symptoms of mental illness or in a mental health crisis until appropriate professional or other help, including peer and family support, can be engaged.

The first training is scheduled at the Garrett County Health Department in the Conference Rooms on Tuesday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and is limited to 24 persons. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please register by April 25^th to attend this training. The course will be taught by Yvonne Perret.

The second training is especially targeted toward helping youth in crisis, and is scheduled at the Garrett County Health Department in the Conference Rooms on Friday, May 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and is limited to 24 persons. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please register by May 4^th to attend this training. The course will be taught by Marcie L. Beiler, LCPC.

The third training is scheduled at the Garrett County Health Department in the Conference Rooms on Thursday, June 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and is limited to 24 persons. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please register by Jun 1^st to attend this training. The course will be taught by Yvonne Perret.

The Mental Health First Aid class presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. These training sessions are for people who work with or are in some way involved with children and youth. Those taking the course to receive certification in Mental Health First Aid will learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

The course would be beneficial for a wide variety of audiences and key professions, including: primary care professionals, employers and business leaders, faith communities, school personnel and educators, police and corrections officers, nursing home staff, mental health authorities, state and county policymakers, volunteers, youth, families, and the general public.
