Diabetes Awareness & Management Presentation Slated At Health Fair
Diabetes Awareness and Management will be one of the presentations at the 2017 Garrett County Health Fair and Fun Festival on April 8th. Presenter Mitzi Wiltison, is a registered nurse at Garrett Regional Medical Center, a certified diabetes educator, and a certified lifestyle coach for the Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Program.
Prevent Type 2 is a program to help participants make lifestyle changes to eat healthier, become more physically active, and improve problem-solving and coping skills. These changes can help delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. In American, 86 million adults have prediabetes (blood sugar levels higher than normal, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes).
Progressing from prediabetes to type 2 can take as little as 5 years. Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of toes, feet or legs. The presentation will explain why prediabetes should be a wakeup call to take action and prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
The Garrett County Health Fair and Family Fun Festival will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CARC (Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex) at Garrett College in McHenry.
