Planning Group Training

Nearly 60 members, representing each of the six Community Planning Groups (CPG) in Garrett County, attended a training held by the Garrett County Health Department (GCHD) recently at Aceβs Run Restaurant.
The highlight of the training was a panel discussion about Combating Prescription Drug and Opioid Problems in Garrett County. Panelists included Garrett County Stateβs Attorney Lisa Thayer Welch, Esq., Sheriff Rob Corley, GCHD Director of Behavioral Health Les McDaniel, GCHD Prevention Coordinator Sadie Liller, and GCHD Prevention Supervisor Sandy Miller.
βOpioid misuse is a growing concern in Garrett County and across the nation,β said Sadie Liller, GCHD Prevention Coordinator. βIt has devastating consequences for individuals and communities. Our goal is to have our community working together to create an atmosphere where positive results are possible.β
CPGs are community-based groups made up of volunteers, both youth and adults, who assist in combatting risky behaviors such as prescription drug and opioid abuse in their communities. Current planning groups include Accident Community Planning Group, Club 21550 (Oakland, Mountain Lake, Loch Lynn area), Crellin Outreach Partnership, Deer Park Eliminators, Friendsville Community Watch, and Kitzmiller Empowerment Group.
For more information about CPG events or prevention and treatment resources, or to volunteer with one of the groups, call the Health Education and Outreach at the Garrett County Health Department at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111.
