Each year, the Garrett County Steps to Better Health Committee offers two scholarships to Garrett County graduating seniors who are pursuing a career in the healthcare field.
This year’s high school recipients are Bethany Carrington and Syrianna Collins.
Bethany Carrington graduated from Calvary Christian Academy’s homeschool review program and plans to attend Concordia University in Wisconsin to earn a nursing degree. “After graduating from college, I hope to return to Garrett County. My goal is to work as a geriatric nurse, ensuring that my patients are treated with dignity and that they maintain a high quality of life.”
Syrianna Collins graduated from Southern High School and plans to attend Garrett College for pre-nursing classes. Since working at Dennett Road Nursing Home and earning her GNA, Syrianna acknowledges that this path “isn’t easy but so rewarding.”
The Steps to Better Health Scholarship is designed to encourage recipients to pursue a career in the healthcare field.
Scholarship requirements include:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Plan to major in a health-related field at a two- or four-year college or university
- Demonstrate good character and leadership
- Demonstrate involvement in extracurricular and/or community activities
The Steps Committee is composed of local businesses, public agencies, and private citizens who want to improve the community’s overall wellness. The committee organizes the Garrett County Health Fair and Family Fun Festival, held each April.
