Student Volunteerism Leads to National Recognition and $10,000 Prize for Local Nonprofit

Feb 26, 2019 | Press Releases

A local eighth grader at Southern Garrett Middle School has been nationally recognized as one of U.S. Cellular’s 16 under 16 award recipients through The Future of Good program. Caroline Argabrite received the recognition for her exceptional volunteerism at local literacy nonprofit The Reading Station, founded by beloved educator Sue Lisantti.

Caroline’s contributions to supporting literacy and hands-on assistance to patrons expanded over the last year when she, along with Lisantti, introduced the program to the Garrett County Health Department’s community engagement platform on mygarrettcounty.com. The platform, also known as the Garrett County Planning Tool, was used to help promote the program, share local literacy data, and encourage others to follow in her footsteps in supporting this tremendously beneficial community service.

As a result of Caroline’s contributions to promoting literacy and integrating technology to help serve the organization’s mission, The Reading Station will receive a $10,000 prize from U.S. Cellular at 5:15 pm on March 21, 2019, at the Oakland U.S. Cellular store (13180 Garrett Highway). The public is invited to attend the event, enjoy refreshments, and learn more about the organization’s efforts to promote literacy in Garrett County.
