The Ultimate Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt Announced

May 11, 2017 | Press Releases

The Drug-Free Communities Action Team to Prevent Underage and Binge Drinking will host The Ultimate Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt from May 14 – 20 in various Garrett County neighborhoods as a part of National Prevention Week 2017.

“The Action Team decided to do something a little different this year,” said Brenda Sisler, Prevention Coordinator at the Health Department. “This event seeks to build community ties between its resources, adults, families, and youth while participants learn important facts about the dangers of underage and binge drinking.”

“When you take a close look at the factors in a youth’s life that protect them from making unhealthy choices, many of them point to strong connections and bonds to the community and the adults in their lives,” Sisler said. “They need to feel supported, respected, and honored for their uniqueness.”

The event is open to participants ages 8 and older. Individuals, or teams of up to five participants can take lots of selfies, win prizes, and learn facts about the dangers of underage and binge drinking.  The specifics of the hunt will be kept secret until it is launched on GarrettHealth.org on Friday, May 12, but the event will take participants to areas where they can walk to most locations and is handicap accessible. The entire hunt should take less than an hour to complete.

“So, be ready to join The Ultimate Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt when we launch on GarrettPlan.org Friday,” Sisler said. “Follow the directions we give you, and each time you post a photo to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or GarrettPlan.org with the hashtag #HPWScav, you’ll earn 1 entry for our “pool” of prizes! Photos at specific selfie spots scattered around the county will earn you 5 entries per photo, or 10 entries if you visit one of the prescription drug drop off locations. You have to check it out…there’s too much to tell you here.”

A grant from BHA and SAMHSA will allow individuals and teams with the most points to win prizes.

For more information and to learn how to win prizes visit GarrettPlan.org or call Brenda Sisler at 301-334-7730.
