Health Department Urges Use of Cervical Cancer Screening Services
During Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Garrett County Health Department reminds everyone that of all cancers that affect women, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable. However, an estimated 230 Maryland women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and approximately 70 will die from the disease this year. The most important thing women can do to help prevent cervical cancer is to get screened regularly, starting at age 21. Cervical cancer screenings, called Pap tests, can actually prevent cancer by finding abnormal cells before they turn to cancer.
βItβs so important for women to get regular Pap tests because cervical cancer often does not have any symptoms until the late stages of cancer,β explains Caroline Evans, RN from Garrett County Health Department. Pap tests are covered by most health insurance plans and if women are NOT insured, the Garrett County Breast and Cervical Cancer Program can provide eligible women with no cost screening services.
Since 1992, the Maryland Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) has been helping women get cervical cancer screening tests and needed follow-up tests. In 24 years, BCCP has completed over 150,100 Pap tests and diagnosed 85 cases of cervical cancer. But the real success is the 648 cases of precancerous cell changes that were caught early and potentially prevented a case of cervical cancer. The program is active in every jurisdiction in Maryland.
βWomen can call us at 301-334-7770 to find out if we can help them get their cervical cancer screening,β urges Caroline Evans. βOur program can also help women make appointments, find transportation and get any follow-up tests. This New Year, make a resolution to take care of your health and get screened!β
